The Exempt Micro Enterprise (EME)

The Tourism BEE Charter Council is in the process of aligning the Tourism Charter to the dti Codes of Good Practice. Once this process has been completed the Tourism Charter will be gazetted as a Sector Code and will then become binding on all organs of state and all those enterprises who do business with the organs of state..
Presently, the gazetted dti Codes of Good Practice have exempt enterprises with an annual turnover of less than R5 million from complying with the dti scorecard.
What does this mean to you?
It means that if you have an annual turnover of less than R5 million you are an “Exempt Micro Enterprise”. Your company fits into the 65 - 75% bracket which automatically makes you a good BEE Contributor. Your BEE Recognition level is 4.
To attain your EME Certificate
Contact the dti BEE Unit on 012 394 1634 and request assistance in attaining your Exempt Micro Enterprise (EME) Certificate. You will have to provide them with proof of your annual turnover prior to them issuing you with an EME Certificate.
Your potential client’s will request your BEE Recognition Level or BEE Status from you prior to doing business with you. As an Exempt Micro Enterprise you can explain to them that you have a BEE Recognition Level of 4 and send them a copy of your EME Certificate.
For any further assistance, please contact Arlene Wilson-Max, the Director of Stakeholder Relations at the Tourism Empowerment Council on Tel: 012 310 3037 or Cell: 079 602 4927 Email: awilson-max@deat.gov.za
Please note that the alignment of the Tourism Charter with the Codes of Good Practice might have implications on the status of exempted EMEs. Please note that the Council promotes the spirit of transformation, and it is for this reason that we encourage tourism businesses to comply with the Tourism Charter. It makes good business sense to comply. It promotes innovation. It renders you a good corporate citizen. With transformation we can achieve economic growth and stability for our country.
