TV Licenses

According to the Broadcasting Act No 4 of 1999 no business may use a television set unless in possession of a valid business licence issued against payment of the prescribed fee in terms of the Act. This is defined in the Act by the following: “…a person who uses a television set

It is therefore clear from the above that all owners/operators of B&B’s, etc must be in possession of such a licence, in addition to any licence for a personal TV.
NB. A TV in a lounge that can be viewed by paying guests does NOT qualify as a personal set.

Any business with 10+ TV sets qualifies for a discount on a sliding scale up to 500 sets with a maximum of a 25% discount. As an organization, NAA qualifies for this maximum, so even those owners with fewer than 10 sets benefit from this discount. However, the discount does NOT apply to NEW licences. It will only be applied on the first renewal.

OWNERS OF SETS In order to obtain the appropriate Business licence for the first time a member should contact the SABC on 011 330-9702, quoting the NAA membership number. Details will then be given on the procedure to follow.
A new owner taking over an existing establishment must also apply for a new licence number.
RENTING SETS If TV’s are rented, through Teljoy for example, details along with the NAA membership number will be submitted by the company to the SABC on the owner’s behalf.
NAA DATABASE ALL members whether owning or renting MUST enter the number of sets on the NAA website as the NAA is required by the SABC to submit a list of paid up members with their licence numbers and number of sets each year around June. The information is extracted from the NAA website database. It is therefore imperative that TV details are on the database. The SABC does not have access to the database.
The database can be accessed via the Members Login and the NAA membership number.
LICENCE RENEWAL TV Licenses must be paid by 7 October each year to be eligible for the discount. Failure to pay by that date will mean that the discount will be reversed; the member will then be liable for the full amount, and any penalties incurred. If the discounted amount is paid after due date, the balance will be carried forward to the next year when no discount will be allowed.
PAYMENT OF LICENCE Existing licence holders can pay their fees on line simply and easily at www.tvlic.co.za, by registering a password. Even if a renewal notice has not been received it is advisable to pay the required amount, presently R225.00 per set, less the 25% discount. Should the SABC require faxed proof of payment, ensure that the name of the establishment and licence number are included on the proof sheet.
